The Least of These...
17 May 2007
I'm preaching in a month on The Sheep and the Goats (Matt. 25:31-46).Gulp.
Any thoughts? How does a pastor handle a text like this with authenticity and faithfulness? In middle class America? Any resources you would recommend?
Aside: I feel sorry for goats today, who are forever tagged by Christendom with the stigma of being unkind.
Help!

Hi Drew,
First time poster, long time pest...
I would go straight forward man, don't be afriad of the "social" justice implications in this post. I will tell you what, a good read that doesn't directly deal with this passage, but does get you thinking while waiting on the back door is "The Myth of a Christian Nation" by Gregory Boyd.
This passage in Matt is pregant with Kingdom language, and Boyd makes a great case for what the Kingdom of God life should look like.

Hey, this is probably way after the fact, but I had a man in Ireland once quip to me: "want trouble? get a goat." Apparently they're a real pain in the rear. I don't really know good pastoral resources for that section, I just am using it as a central part of my current chapter to overturn pat definitions of grace and mercy, but it's a definite hard one!
you still coming over to Glasgow this summer? Josh Cook and a group from Scum will also be there in July... looks like I'll be making at least one weekend pilgrimage...
