Random Question...

This may seem to come from left field, but does anyone have any connections in children's book publishing? If so, let me know via email: drewmoser[at]gmail[dot]com.

Give Gifts w/ a Mission

14 December 2007

Elliedub - Mission Tailored Clothing

Click it. I dare you.
Ok, I'm politely asking you.
These shirts are incredible (mine just arrived yesterday), and they're for a good cause.
Good gift, good fashion, good cause.
That's a win, win, win...right?

Thoreau was on to something...

13 December 2007

"The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation."
--Henry David Thoreau (Walden)

It's tragically evident. Whether its the weekend warrior/climb-the-corporate-ladder alpha-male, or the quintessential 'soccer mom', people are leading lives of quiet desperation. It's a subtle desperation, which is probably the most dangerous kind. Cloaked in success, status, and plastic credit, people try their darnedest to stuff this desperate cry from the soul into silence.

Outside they are 'flourishing'. Inside....they're dying.

The inevitable question is 'Why?'. Why are we so desperate?

Pascal offers some insight: "There is a God shaped vacuum in the heart of every man which cannot be filled by any created thing, but only by God, the Creator, made known through Jesus."

Alternative 'fillers' abound: power, entitlement, new age religion, money, toys, hobbies, etc.

But to deny your heart and soul of its deepest craving is akin to trying to stuff a square peg into a round hole.

It doesn't fit. It may cover the hole temporarily, but it doesn't fit.

So, what are you truly desperate for? Dig deep, dig deep.

My wife sums it up pretty well.

4 'P's for loving your neighborhood...

06 December 2007

I'm re-reading Scot McKnight's The Jesus Creed. [If you haven't read this, pick up a copy. It's excellent.] On p. 55, he draws from the Singapore Anglican Church on how to effectively, strategically, and authentically love your neighborhood [mnemonically devised into 4 'P's]:

1. Praying for the neighborhood, corporately and individually.
2. Profiling the neighborhood; assessing the true needs.
3. Pursuing projects of kindness and cultural submersion.
4. Partnering with other Christians in these projects of love.

A pretty good strategy, eh? What would your neighborhood look like if your church carried this out? What would your church look like?

Who's hiding from who?

05 December 2007

"I am beginning now to see how radically different the character of my spiritual journey will change when I no longer think of God as hiding out and making it difficult as possible for me to find him, but, instead, as the one who is looking for me while I am doing the hiding."--Henri Nouwen

[Who's the one really hiding in your spiritual journey? ]

A Miscellany on the Present...

04 December 2007

Soooo. . . long time no blog. My time and energy have been needed elsewhere, so this blog has lain fallow. For the three of you who read this, I apologize. I'll try to break through the blogger's block (is there such a thing?) with some present randomness from my life:
  • Came across a great quote from D.A. Carson recently, courtesy of our youth pastor. I'm not a big fan of Carson's take on the emerging church, but in terms of his assessment of corporate worship in the church (generally speaking), he's dead on right: "...it's a bit like those who begin by admiring the sunset and soon begin to admire themselves admiring the sunset." [Worship by the Book, p. 31]
  • THE Ohio State University Buckeyes are going to the BCS Title Game. That makes this Buckeye fan a happy man...GO BUCKS!
  • Some fellow Guat-adopt friends of ours have started a t-shirt company that you should check out. Proceeds help families who are trying to adopt. The company is called Ellie Dub. I've got a brown Antigua comin' my way. (Many more countries/styles to come. . . so stay tuned)
  • Speaking of adoption...don't ask. We're still in the final court (PGN). Pray for a breakthrough NOW. Trust me, when we get out of the courts, you won't have to check this blog or our adoption blog to find this out. You'll hear me, screaming from the top of my lungs. That's right regular reader from Sri Lanka who I don't know...you'll be hearing from me.
  • Gmail is awesome. They now have colored labels, which compelled me to completely overhaul my email organization. It took way TOO long, but with as much as I spend using GMail, it's worth it. The labels, when combined with Gmail's filtering system, makes keeping my email organized a cinch. I even have ZERO emails in my inbox. Here's a screenshot of the goodness:
  • Bekah, Ben, Baby-in-womb, and yours truly are headed to Denver on Friday morning for a long weekend in the mountains with good friends. We LOVE Denver (and loved living there) and can't wait to spend a few days there.
